Family Get Together
Terri has a rather large family. She has many aunts and uncles and more cousins than you can possibly imagine. A few months back her “Uncle” Steven, who lives in California, told Terri’s Mom that he had plans to come to NJ in August. Terri’s Mom thought it would be nice to have a big get together the weekend that he was going to be here and some how the planning for this fell into Terri’s lap. We looked at a bunch of parks in the area but everything had been booked for months by the time wegot around to planning this. Renting a place out to have it didn’t make a whole lot of sense so we decided to have everyone over our house.
I was a little nervous because when we put the guest list together, we came up with 13 adults and 5 kids. We had less than that here for Dylan’s birthday and while his birthday was fun, Terri and I were beat afterwards and basically said never again. Now we were looking at having more people. Thing is, it worked out. We had gorgeous weather which allowed us to utilize our deck and not have everyone inside. We setup an extra table on the deck so we had people at that table, the regular table thats on the deck and some people were inside at our kitchen table. Everyone brought something to eat and we fired up the grill and supplied the burgers and hot dogs. The kids, well they were more than happy to play on Dylan’s swing set, play with Dylan’s toys and play with Dylan. I was a little worried about the swing set, hoping that when I put it together, I did it well enough that it wouldn’t fall over. Well, the kids, the swung the hell out of it and it is still standing. Needs some tightening but took the abuse all day long and delivered a good time for the kids. I keep referring to them as “kids” and they are really Dylan’s cousins, not first cousins, not even second cousins but still cousins. Anyway, one of the kids, Alexander, was playing with Dylan and decided to pick Dylan up and put him on the kiddie slide that Dylan loves so much. It was such a sweet gesture and I know Dylan loved the helo to get on his slide.
The majority of the guests arrived around 2pm and the last of them left a little after 9. It was a long day but it was a good day and everything went really well. I’m glad we did it and Terri didn’t let me talk her out of having so many people in our house. I’m not sure I would want to do it on a rainy day or in the winter where everyone would be inside but maybe, just maybe that would work out too.
The reason “Uncle” Steven was in town was because of the Broadway show Grease. I don’t know the back story but basically he had tickets to the premier and tickets to the premier party after the show. Terri got one of the tickets so Dylan and I have been hanging out all day long. We ran a couple of arrands, played…A LOT and went to visit my parents later in the afternoon. The bulk of our conversation went like this:
Dylan: Da-da
Me: Dylan
Dylan: Da-da
Me: Dylan
Dylan: Ma-Ma
Me: She’s not here right now, she’ll be home later
Dylan: Ma-Ma
Dylan: Ma-Ma
Dylan: Ma-Ma
Me: She’s not here right now, she’ll be home later, I promise
Dylan: Doggie….
I think I had this conversation with him at least 2 dozen times but its so cute so who cares….
I’m always a little sad when Monday comes and Dylan has to go to day-care and I have to go to work and tomorrow will be no exception.
