Boston and Back!!
We are back and boy did we have a good time. The trip up on Friday Night took a little longer than I had hoped but in the end 4 1/2 hours to get to Boston isn’t too bad. Dylan slept most of the way and woke up right near the hotel and waited in the car while Daddy and Uncle Mike went to check in. A little snafu on the part of expedia, they seemed to think non-smokers would like a smoking room, even when checking off non-smoking. Mike asked me if I thought Terri would noticed and I said give her 2 seconds once she walks into the room… That didn’t even happen, she noticed outside in the hallway. It took Dylan a while to settle down in a new place but eventually he fell asleep and the best part for him, he would get to sleep with Mommy and Daddy the whole time as the crib we requested really wasn’t a crib.
Saturday - We woke up, ate and headed out to do the Freedom Trail. We started at the USS Constitution and walked all the way to Boston Commons. Dylan fell asleep a little bit before the Old North Church and I found out later we missed an awesome bakery in the area which will certainly be on our agenda next time. When we got to Boston Commons, Dylan had fun running around in the dirt and getting absolutely messy. He didn’t have his bathing suit so we figured this would be a good place to come on Sunday and make it a Dylan Day. Vizma met up with us for dinner and we went to Fire and Ice in Harvard Square where: Dylan almost covered some woman in food, Dylan got to witness the horrors that are frat boys and was out way past his bedtime.
Sunday - We eventually made our way back to Boston Commons with a bathing suit in hand. We started out by letting Dylan splash around in the little wading pool (water is about knee deep on him) but it was a little chilly. I do think he had fun though. We then found a shady place to each lunch and then met up with Erika, Jay and Sammy. Before we left for Boston I made plans with Erika to meet up with her and her family. I’ve been reading her blog for years now and been in somewhat regular contact with her over those years. I was also in a fantasy baseball league one year with her and Jay so I thought this would be a good thing to do. I was right. The three of them are great people and I know Terri and I had a lot of fun with them. Sure, it was mostly parent talk so I don’t know if Mike and Vizma had fun but I think they did. We let Sammy and Dylan run around the park for a while and then made our way to go get lunch. Sammy and Dylan had fun stealing each others crayons and seeing who could say “Ahhh” the loudest at each other. After lunch we all went our seperate ways but I was glad they made the trip in. (They live outside of Boston) Next time we are in Boston we will certainly be seeing them again. Terri and I have been reading about Sammy since Erika announced her pregnancy online and it was great to see how well he is doing. He was always on the go, not really letting Erika or Jay get a breather and it was such a happy feeling to watch that. For us anyway!! After lunch we went back to the hotel, took a nap, went swimming and then ordered take-out for dinner since we were out late the night before.
Monday - Another Dylan day as we hit the Children’s Museum. There wasn’t a lot for Dylan to do at that Museum but we found a 0-3 years room which we stayed in for a couple of hours. There was this car you could sit in and turn the steering wheel or push the “radio” buttons. Dylan loves wheels and seemed to really like the song that was playing in the car so we spent a lot of time in the car. There was also a moose puppet we played with but I think Mommy, Daddy and Uncle Mike had more fun with that than Dylan did. On our way out of the Museum, we walked through a few other rooms. I’m sure when he is older he will certainly love every room in this place. Best way to describe the Museum… Daycare, ON CRACK…..
Tuesday - We were leaving Tues night so we figured the best thing to do was to head back to Boston Commons for a few hours and let Dylan run around and tire himself out. We tried the playground again but there were too many big kids around so that didn’t work. We went for a walk in the gardens and Dylan took a liking to the ducks or the water near the ducks. At either rate he was running back to both. We then moved away from the ducks and water and found a couple and their dog. Science has created the perfect dog. A Golden Doodle. Its a minature poodle mixed with a Golden Retriever. Its small, it doesn’t shed, its hypo-allergenic and it acts exactly like a Golden Retriever. Thats my next dog. Dylan wanted to sit and pet the dog, which he did for a while but this was the park and the dog just wanted to play. We moved to another area and let Dylan play in the grass for a while. After that we walked over to Quincy Market, bought some shirts for my niece and nephew and then went to each an early dinner so we could hit the road. We got a little lost getting out of Boston, ended up by Fenway Park but eventually got out to I90 and made it home in a little over 3 1/2 hours.
I’ve said it before and I will say it again, given the perfect oppurtunity I would move to Boston in a heartbeat. I think my brother-in-law had a lot of fun up there but I know he was surprised by Red Sox Nation. He knew going up they were crazy about the team but I don’t think you can actually explain how crazy they are, its something you have to see. He asked at one point if Boston handed out Red Sox Jerseys at the airport like the way Hawaii hands out leis to the people coming in. I think the defining moment was walking past a store front that had a crowd watching the game on a TV in the store window. I also think Dylan had a lot of fun and its going to be hard for myself to leave him tomorrow and go to work, especially since I have to go to a client in Philly tomorrow. I have plenty of pictures and will probably post them next weekend.
